In nine rounds of intense competition, eighth seeded Wayzata High School freshman Andrew Tang took first place in the North American Junior Chess Championship by finishing 7.5 out of 9 and defeating some top junior players from USA and Canada.

He earned the International Master title and his first Grand Master norm. The North American Junior (U20) Chess Championship was held from July 31 to August 4 in Kichener, Ontario.

Tang started learning chess at the age of four in his preschool. He became a US National Master while in sixth grade at East Middle School. He is one of a few junior players in the U.S. who have earned the International Master title and is working toward the Grand Master title, which is the highest title that can be achieved by a chess player.
