Wayzata Police Chief Mike Risvold issued a Crime Alert this morning advising the public about a rash of thefts from mailboxes.

In a specific case that occurred recently, "mail from a Wayzata residence was returned by the Eden Prairie Police Department."

Risvold continued indicating that mail theft targets include checks, items of value, and documents that contain information about identity that can be used in identity theft.

The public is encouraged to take steps to lessen the risk of these issue by not using their residential mailbox to send outgoing mail, not using the red flag on the mailbox, and to use a mailbox with a lock on it if possible.

If you see a stranger approach or take mail from a mailbox, residents are encouraged to dial 911 with a physical description of any persons or vehicles including license plate and direction of travel if possible.
