The Rosemount Irish return to tournament action after a one-year absence. This is their sixth
appearance. If they win it would be their second championship; they won previously in 1981. The Wayzata Trojans, who are looking for their third title, are making their fourth consecutive and 10th overall appearance. They lost in the quarterfinals last year but won previous championships in 2005 and 2008.
This year’s Rosemount squad depends heavily on its ground game. Senior Andrew Hausmann rushed for 17 touchdowns this year and tallied 993 yards on 200 carries. Senior quarterback Kevin Larson added 1,026 rushing yards on 126 carries and accounted for 13 additional touchdowns. Larson also completed 47 percent of his passing attempts and connected for 795 yards and nine touchdowns.
Senior David Morgan was Larson’s favorite target with 17 catches and three touchdowns this year. On the defensive side, junior Matt Larson and Morgan had 84 and 78 tackles, respectively. Rosemount averages 32.1 points per game while holding opponents to 12.1.
This year’s Wayzata squad is competent both through the air and on the ground. Senior quarterback Sasha Doran connected on 61 percent of his pass attempts for 947 yards and 14 touchdowns. He tossed 22 of those passes to senior Tanner Helgren, who tallied seven touchdowns and 438 yards. Sophomore Mitch Underhill and senior Aaron Roth led the Trojans’ ground game this year.
Underhill had 88 carries for 761 yards and nine touchdowns, and Roth added 613 yards and eight touchdowns. Senior David Boegel and junior Ryan Poppitz had 91 and 87 tackles, respectively, for Wayzata. The Trojans averaged 32.0 points per game this year and their opponents averaged 11.2 against them.
