Your Wayzata Trojans (10-0) defeated the Mounds View Mustangs (10-2) in the Class AAAAA Prep-Bowl Semifinal Saturday night at the Metrodome by a score of 21-16.
Wayzata scored early as Trojan defensive back Sean Hamline intercepted a pass from Mustang QB Nik Anderson and returned it 30 yards for a touchdown.
Also in the first quarter, Trojan Tanner Helgren capped a 5 play, 51 yard scoring drive for Wayzata with a 21 yard reception from QB Sasha Doran.
Mounds View made the game interesting as the Mustangs scored in the 4th quarter on an 85 yard, 17 play drive that ended with a tipped pass from Mustang QB Nik Anderson to Blake Anderson. On the following possession, Trojan punter Nick Martin had his kick blocked on a 4th and six yards by Mustang defender Maze Thompson; the ball dribbled out of the end zone for a safety against the Trojans to make it 14-9.
Late in the game, Nick Martin scrambled for 62 yards to bring the Trojans to the Mustang 11 yard line and set up the Trojans final score of the evening--a 2 yard scamper by Aaron Roth to put Wayzata up 21-9.
Rosemount wasn't finished as Mustang receiver Jimmy Duffy caught his second Nik Anderson pass for a touch down on the evening. A questionable roughing the passer call kept the drive alive for the Mustangs as the squad drove 73 yards in 8 plays.
Rosemount's last gasp came as they started a drive on the Wayzata 43 with 2:16 left in 4Q, and the Trojan defense needed a stop on a 4th and 6 at the 39. Trojan defender David Boegel knocked away a pass to take over on downs and seal the game.
The Trojans will take on Rosemount in the Class AAAAA Championship November 26 at 7:00 pm in the Metrodome.
