Dear Friends --

I wanted to take a moment this morning to update you on our situation.

We have made no secret over the past few months about the struggles we are facing in our uphill battle to simply break even and keep The Bookcase a part of the Wayzata landscape for generations to come.

To that end, we have come to recognize that our #1 problem right now is the cost of renting our building. It has become clear to us that the long-term success of The Bookcase will, at some point, include a relocation to a more affordable spot -- elsewhere in downtown Wayzata.

Our lease at 607 East Lake Street does not expire for a few more years. However, we have reached an agreement with our landlord to begin actively looking for a new tenant for our space now -- in the hopes that we can relocate as quickly as possible.

As soon as possibly later today, you will see "For Lease" signs appearing in our windows. This will undoubtedly garner some attention from the community, as The Bookcase has been at this spot as long as most of us can remember.

But I want to take a minute to assure you that this is part of our plan. We do not want to close. We want to move. But we feel that it's important to try to speed up the timeline of this transition, as that gives us our best chance to find the best possible new location for our store.

So ... while we will miss our outstanding view of Lake Minnetonka, and the convenience of having Caribou a few feet from our front counter once we do move, we remain committed to finding a way to continue to have The Bookcase an important part of the Wayzata community.

Feel free to contact me if you have any questions, and do not be shy about letting me know if you know of somebody who might be interested in our space. The sooner we can make this happen, the better our chances of having a happy ending. :-)
