The Wayzata Police Department has accepted a donation of two electric bikes from the Andersen window company via the Wayzata Crime Prevention Coalition.

Mathews, 47, was struck and killed by a vehicle while on duty in 2017 when responding to a 911 call about debris on Highway 12. Officer Mathews had served the Wayzata Police Department for nine years, and had also served in various communities prior.

After a Renewal by Andersen sales consultant met with Shawn Mathews, Officer Mathews’ widow, and learned of her story, the company reached out to the police department to ask what they needed. As a result, Renewal by Andersen decided to honor Officer Mathews with a donation of two much-needed e-bikes for the department.

Valued at $5,800, the e-bikes will help the department with patrol and community outreach efforts.

“We are grateful for Renewal by Andersen’s donation to the Crime Prevention Coalition, which will help the department better serve our community – what a fine way to honor Officer Mathews’ memory,” said Wayzata Chief of Police Mike Risvold.

Renewal by Andersen presented the e-bikes to the police department during a ceremony on Thursday, June 13, prior to the annual Wayzata Fire vs. Wayzata Police charity softball game at Klapprich Field.

“When we met Shawn, we were touched by her story, and we knew we wanted to take action to honor her late husband’s memory,” said Tim Ruff, manager of Renewal by Andersen of the Twin Cities. "We could think of no better way than donating this much-needed equipment to the police department Officer Mathews dedicated his life to for so many years. It’s important to us to try to make a difference in our community.”
