DNR reminder: ice is not safe right now

Ice is forming on some lakes, rivers and ponds around Minnesota, but DNR conservation officers warn it is too early to venture out.

“The thin layers of ice forming on some Minnesota waters right now are not safe,” said Maj. Greg Salo, operations manager, DNR Enforcement Division. “A few days of cold temperatures don’t create ice strong enough to hold a person.”

According to Salo, three people died last winter after falling through the ice.

The DNR recommends anyone heading out on the ice should: carry a set of ice picks, check with a local bait shop or resort— ask about ice conditions— and measure the ice.

DNR clear ice thickness recommendations are:
4 inches for walking.
5 inches for a snowmobile or ATV.
8-12 inches for a car.
12-15 inches for a medium-sized truck.

For more information, visit www.dnr.state.mn.us/safety/ice/thickness.html.

Wayzata Youth Hockey issued the following statement over the weekend in response to the death of Eagan hockey player Patrick Schoonover during the Battle for the Blue Ox Bantam AA tournament game between Eastview and Wayzata:

"The coaches, players and parents of Wayzata Youth Hockey Association and the Wayzata Bantam AA hockey team extend our deepest condolences and sympathies to the family of the Eastview player who passed away late yesterday during a game against Wayzata. Our Association community is heartbroken and devastated but this pales in comparison to the loss we know the family, coaches and players of Eastview must be feeling. We extend our prayers to the family and ask that whole Minnesota hockey community remember and celebrate this young man’s life.”

DNR: Minnesota’s snowmobile trails open Dec. 1

Despite the recent snowfall throughout much of Minnesota, snowmobile trails are not yet ready for riding, according to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.

Minnesota’s snowmobile trails officially open Dec. 1; however, several conditions must be met before trails open and are ready for travel:

  • Ground must be frozen allowing for crossings in wet areas.
  • Trails must have adequate snow cover – about 12 inches – on the ground to allow for trail packing and grooming.
  • Landowner permits that allow trails on private land must be in place.
  • Trails must be cleared of dead fall, signs need to be in place and gates need to be opened.

The vast majority of the state’s 22,000 miles of groomed snowmobile trail system exists on private property with written permission from the landowner. The permission allows snowmobile use only from Dec. 1 through March 31.

When the trails open, the DNR urges early season riders to use caution. Early season trails may have fallen trees or other debris across the trails, unfrozen areas, rocks or ruts, or standing crops and closed gates.

In preparation for Dec. 1, the DNR reminds riders to verify their snowmobile registration is current. Information on registration as well as snowmobile trail maps and snowmobile safety course information is available at www.dnr.state.mn.us/snowmobiling/index.html or by contacting the DNR Information Center at info.dnr@state.mn.us or651-296-6157, 888-646-6367, between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

WAYZATA PUBLIC SCHOOLS: Fall musical Spamalot scheduled for November 13-15 & November 20-22

Wayzata High School and the Wayzata Players, under the direction of Mark Gitch, Adam Hegg, Melissa O’Neill, and Cathy Wind, are proud to present the fall musical, “Spamalot”.

If nothing else we must take silliness seriously. Monty Python’s “Spamalot” is an absurd romp through the middle ages. Our students will don swords and tabards and seek the Holy Grail through a Vegas-like Camelot, a Forest where dwell Knights who say “Ni” and killer rodents all while being not quite dead. This show takes absolutely nothing seriously and as such in addition to your ticket make sure to have your sense of humor firmly intact.

Wayzata Players. Image Courtesy WHS.
The cast has been picked and rehearsals have started for this wonderful production. The dates of the show are November 13-15 & November 20-22 on the main stage in the auditorium at WHS. Tickets are $10.00 for students through high school, $12.00 for senior citizens, and $15.00 for adults. It is reserved seating.

There are two ways to get the tickets: Online with EPay or at the door the time of the performances.

Get your tickets fast!!! You won’t want to miss the great performances!! This will be a show to remember.

LMCD: Public Hearing to Consider a Petitioned Quiet Water Area

Proposed quiet waters.
The Lake Minnetonka Conservation District (LMCD) will be holding a public hearing on Wednesday, November 12, 2014 to gather testimony on the receipt of a petition for the establishment of a Quiet Water Area (QWA) from the north Seton Channel area to the east end of Deering Island. This area covers parts of Harrisons Bay and West Arm (see proposed area map within). The public hearing will be conducted during the LMCD’s Regular Board meeting held at Wayzata City Hall, 600 Rice Street, Wayzata, MN 55391, starting at 7:00 p.m.

LMCD Code Section 3.02, “Watercraft Speed,” establishes the watercraft speed for Lake Minnetonka (including approved QWAs). In such an area, no watercraft may be operated at a speed in excess of 5 miles per hour or at a speed which results in more than a minimum wake.

The LMCD considers petitions for the establishment of a QWA via an approved policy. On August 5, 2014, the LMCD received a petition (with attachments that provided background of their request) for the establishment of a QWA from Robert and Gloria Rich, Randy Bickmann, Norina Dove, and Gene and Wendy Shavlik. This information, as well as the approved QWA policy and a scanned copy of the November 12th Board packet are also available within.

The LMCD values input and feedback from all stakeholders. All interested parties (or a designated representative of multiple parties) that attend the public hearing will be given an opportunity to be heard. For stakeholders with questions or comments (including those unable to attend the public hearing), please contact LMCD Executive Director Greg Nybeck at 952-745-0789 or gybeck@lmcd.org. Further consideration of the petition will be scheduled at a future Board meeting.

Cable subscribers in the Mediacom area can view recorded LMCD meetings on the Lake Minnetonka Communications Commission’s Government Channel 20, as well as Video on Demand via their website, www.lmcc-tv.org.
