McCarthy, Wayzata’s First Female Firefighter, Announces Bid for City Council

Johanna McCarthy
I am announcing my candidacy for City Council in a community my family has been privileged call home for 18 years. My campaign will emphasize preserving our neighborhoods, promoting public safety, and ensuring fiscal responsibility–critical areas for the sustainability of Wayzata.

My motivation is public service, which is not new to me. In 1997, after my husband and I moved to Wayzata, I joined the Fire Department serving as its first female firefighter. For over 5 years, I was a firefighter and first responder until leaving in 2002 after the birth of our first son, also I have been a tenacious advocate for the safety and well-being our citizens.

Wayzata is experiencing rapid change, including increased traffic and serious safety issues for pedestrians and bicyclists. There are increased demands on our police and fire departments, businesses need parking, individual neighborhoods want their unique problems solved, and everyone wants city fiscal resources used wisely. As our city’s challenges continue to expand, I will advocate for thoughtful and fiscally responsible city improvements that reflect the needs of the entire community.

Experience as a project manager for Fortune 100 companies, financial analyst, and as executive director of a global public relations firm make me well qualified to wade through difficult issues and find solutions in a strategic, budget friendly, yet decisive manner.

All members of the community may contact me with their own concerns or issues at or by phone at 612-803-3038.
