Wayzata High School Student Matt Ferro Featured in Star Tribune for Public Safety Film

Wayzata High School senior Matt Ferro was featured in the Star Tribune for being one of six finalists in the Rock the Belt video contest, a competition more than 75 Minnesota teenagers entered advocating the importance of buckling your seat belt to other teens.

Ferro, who is planning on studying film at Emerson College in Boston, said he entered the contest because he had never done a 30-second video spot before and wanted to push himself and try something different. He created the computer simulated car crash, and had help from the Plymouth Fire Department in staging the aftermath scene. The video also features two other Wayzata High School seniors.

The video was shot on a few different days, for up to six hours, Ferro said. He was working on editing the footage for about three weeks.

While trying to write a concept, Ferro said he was trying to think of something different than the typical public safety announcement that rattles off statistics. "I wanted to show the impact of your decision and what could happen," Ferro said.

To vote for Ferro, or to view other finalist videos, visit the Rock the Belt Web site. Ferro's video titled "Nothing Can Replace a Life" is featured below.
