When the Wayzata softball team looked at the section 6AAA brackets for the first time it was probably a little nervous to see that Armstrong would be its first round opponent.
While the Falcons posted a rather harmless 8-12 record during the regular season, it beat the Trojans in two of the three games between the two teams in Classic Lake Conference play.
On Tuesday afternoon, the Falcons didn’t make things easy for the Trojans, but the Trojans managed to escape with a 1-0 victory to move into the semifinals of the winners bracket.
The shutout was the eighth of the season for senior pitcher Anna Twinem.
The Trojans will now face another familiar foe in the semifinals on Friday. The Trojans and Hopkins will play at 2 p.m. for the right to move into the finals of the winners bracket. Just like Armstrong, Hopkins beat the Trojans two out of three games during the regular season including a 5-0 victory to close out the regular season on May 13.
Top seeded Richfield and fifth seeded Edina will meet in the other winners bracket semifinal game. Armstrong, Cooper, Park Center and Benilde-St. Margaret’s are still alive in the loser’s bracket.
