WAYZATA ATHLETICS 2009: Bacso and Schember Lead Ski Teams to State

Both the boys and girls Nordic ski teams from Wayzata will participate in next week's state meet at Giants Ridge in Biwabik after both teams won their respective section two meets on Thursday, Feb. 5.

The boys narrowly defeated Orono by a score of 375-371. Senior Kasey Bacso posted the best time in both the freestyle and classical races, and therefore placed first in the pursuit standings with a combined time of 29:25.

Senior Jonathan Griwac finished fifth in the pursuit standings, while sophomore Joshua Blankenship and junior Alex Meyer placed 11th and 12th respectively.

The girls had a slightly larger cushion in the team standings as they defeated second place Maple Grove by a score of 381-366.

Like Bacso, junior Paige Schember posted the top times in both the freestyle and classical races to finish first in the pursuit standings with a combined time of 36:19.

Junior Amanda Lenoe placed sixth, junior Maddie Lambert placed seventh, and senior Meagan Bebchuk placed ninth to round out the top four finishers for the Trojans.

The state meet is Friday, Feb. 13.
