TROJAN TRIBUNE: Smiles for Kids fundraiser put on by WHS student committee

What does rock music and a Minnesota-based non-profit organization have in common? Mack Scott (11).
“I just felt like taking on some type of project for my band,” Scott said.
The idea of having his rock band, Carbon Handshake, play with some other local bands in a benefit concert came to Scott when he was lying in bed one night back in January.
“I see myself as the type of person that when I have an idea or something I want to be done, I’ll do what it takes to get it done,” he said.
What Scott hopes to do is raise $8,000 for Children’s Surgery International (CSI), formerly known as Operation Smile. This Minnesota-based non-profit organization provides surgeries for underprivileged children of the world who suffer primarily from facial deformities, such as cleft lips or cleft palates, as well as urological malformations and burns, according to their website.
Scott hopes to help this organization as a tribute to his 23 year-old brother who was born with Crouzon’s, a rare birth defect which causes facial deformities.
“I give him a lot of respect going threw so much from such a young age,” Scott said of his brother Andy Scott (2005 grad). Since birth, Andy has had 30 facial corrective surgeries. Although CSI does not deal with patients who have Crouzon’s, Scott said he feels they are helping people with issues similar to his brother’s.
Scott has been working to put together an event called Six Band City Sounds, which will take place on August 8, 2009 at the Hilde Performance Center in Plymouth, home of Music in Plymouth. Local bands Elemental Overdrive, Calhoun, Flow & The Mingos, Silent Agency, Red Eyed Revolutionaries and Mack’s band Carbon Handshake will play on the stage.
“Currently I am trying to schedule a meeting with Judy Johnson, the former Mayor of Plymouth, to see if she can help us make this a community event rather than a private event,” Scott said. If it is made private, the event could receive $4,000 dollars in financial aid.
Admission to Six Band City Sound will be free and donation tables will be set up at all entrances as well as in the park. All donations and all other profits will go to CSI. Mack hopes financial aid from the city will help decrease the cost of the event and in turn increase the donation. 2,000 attendants are expected, according to Scott.
Similar to the Music in Plymouth event, Scott plans to have food vendors and booths set up around the park. With the help of local businesses, CSI, the Plymouth Police Department, his committee of WHS students, and other members of the community, Six Band City Sound is on its way to putting a smile on the faces of many children in need. Rules for summer garage sales

With many people doing their summer cleaning, garage sales have been a common sight in Wayzata lately. However, the City of Wayzata does have some guidelines for sales.

According to the 2009 Wayzata City Code (Section 801.16.19), garage sales have the following rules:

1. Merchandise offered for sale shall be the personal property of the occupant.
2. Sales shall be limited to a maximum of four (4) consecutive days and occurring
no more than two (2) times within one (1) calendar year per property.
3. All goods shall be confined within a building and improved driveway with no
display occurring within other portions of the front yard.
4. Signs shall be governed by Section 801.27 of this Ordinance.

Section 801.27 states that "Rummage (garage) sale signs only on private property not exceeding six (6) square feet in area and displayed only during the time of the sale."

Here we go again, the Top 5 stories of the week:

  1. Wayzata High School football coaches Matt Lombardi and Ryan Johnson saved the life of 16-year-old football player Ted Okerstrom. Read how quick thinking and CPR training brought the athlete back to life.

  2. Owner of Wayzata-based Hope Chest for Breast Cancer Barbara Hensley was honored with an award from the National Association of Women Business Owners. She was one of three women from across the nation recognized for her successful business ventures.

  3. It has been a successful week for Wayzata High School alumni. Former Wayzata High School wrestler Danny Zilverberg is part of the most recent class of University of Minnesota recruits that is ranked top in the nation. Another congratulations to Rob Bathe, a recent graduate from Wayzata High School, who will be playing in the Minnesota High School All Star Football Game on June 27.

  4. Foxglove Farm owner Billy Smith is looking to sell the old farmhouse and have it moved to a new location. The farm is in impeccable condition and Smith wishes to sell it to someone who will preserve the home's historical integrity.

  5. The Wayzata business community put their generosity toward preserving the Wayzata Trolley and raised more than $1,100 during a fundraiser. The money will be put toward work that needs to be done annually to keep the trolley in tact, or toward the eventual replacement of the trolley.

The Revolutionary “Flying Pancake” breakfast is coming again this Fourth of July to The Depot

Wayzata used to have fireworks in the sky on the Fourth of July. Now there are pancakes in the air on the Fourth. This is an entertaining mixture of happenings. Guests are asked to “catch them if you can” as the vendor flips pancakes! The highlight for the past two years remains the appearance of authentically dressed Revolutionary soldiers (and others in period dress) who; tell tales of the period, march in drill fashion to the beat of a revolutionary drum and fire their black powder muskets over the lake. The name of the reenactor group is the 7th Pennsylvania Regiment. Last year’s turnout of 600 guests was a huge event, it doubled the previous year. The “Flying Pancake Breakfast” is at the Wayzata Depot from 8 a.m. to noon. Gather up your family and friends and come to this event. Veterans are served breakfast without charge.

The Wayzata Historical Society supports this event as an example of patriotism in action! The Society helps fund the Revolutionary actors who present the history of our nation’s independence in a very real way. This 3rd annual salute to our Nation’s Independence is sponsored by the Lake Minnetonka Children of the American Revolution. C.A.R. is a small group of local youth who have no fundraising arm to support this event and depend entirely on contributions. They are a tax exempt 501(c)3 organization and encourage business and individual donors to help ensure that this community event may continue. The story behind the Children of the American Revolution The C.A.R. is the oldest Patriotic Youth organization in the country. It was organized in 1895 and is headquartered in Washington, D.C. The Lake Minnetonka CAR is the only active C.A.R. Society in Minnesota. The organization’s goal is to train good citizens, develop leaders, promote love of the United States and its heritage among young people. Students from Orono, Blake, Breck, Providence Academy and Wayzata schools man two projects. The July 4th event is their largest project by far, but they also install 15 flags at Heritage Park on the five patriotic holidays which coincide with the days that the city of Wayzata installs theirs. This ceremony is complete with flag awareness, ritual of significance and is inclusive of other youth groups and guests. The idea of featuring “Flying Pancakes” in the July 4th event originated with Orono Senior, Elle Gueringer. Wayzata aspiring to become a butterfly-friendly town

A team of Wayzata residents and members of the business community have created The Butterfly Effect, a movement to make Wayzata a butterfly-friendly town by establishing butterfly gardens. Butterfly gardens are gardens with plants chosen specifically to attract butterflies.

The group has a mission to start the effort by bringing back the Monarch, Minnesota's state butterfly, and to eventually establish Wayzata as a center for butterfly-related activities.

The use of GeoDomains is an international success and a growing enterprise

GeoDomain use has expanded internationally and is used to inform residents and visitors of community relevant information. A GeoDomain is a Web address dedicated to a city or region, for example, Wayzata.com. In an entrepreneurial sense, marketers of GeoDomains have found success in working with community businesses to mutually expand business opportunities and exposure.

In an interview with Boulevards New Media Vice President of Sales Barry Hodge, he explains how Boulevards New Media has found success with their GeoDomains in Los Angeles, Seattle, San Francisco, Denver, Houston, Washington D.C. and Philadelphia. Associated Geos: When were you first introduced to the GeoDomain business? What interested you about it?
Barry Hodge: I was first introduced about seven years ago. The guy I was working for purchased Richmond.com. I must say it was against my better judgment! About 12 months later, he asked me if I would be interested in getting involved.

With a strong marketing background, I was curious about how a local city domain could be used to help local businesses utilize the Internet. I was very fortunate in that I had the opportunity to totally revamp how Richmond.com was presented and marketed.

We chose to shy away from a CPM model, which I totally believe devalues the marketing opportunities that exist for a client, and sold fixed-position marketing solutions. It kind of worked, and in our first full year in Associated Geos, Richmond.com was recognized as one of the best GeoDomains in the country.

We were the first (and as far as I am aware) the only GeoDomain to become the default convention and visitor bureau Web site. We also secured a partnership with the Richmond Association of Realtors that made Richmond.com’s real estate channel the most trafficked real estate Web site outside of Realtor.com.

Boulevards New Media was recognized as the 800-pound gorilla within our industry. It was my ambition to see if I could assist them in replicating the success I had enjoyed in Richmond.

AG: Has the future played out as Boulevards New Media predicted? What does that future look like now?
BH: The cost effect on the Internet with GeoDomains and the ability for advertisers to understand the value of what they are getting or not getting with dollars spent has changed the face of media. The old adage was that 50 percent of advertising revenue is wasted, but they never knew what 50 percent.

The Internet has changed that because it’s so transparent. It’s either working or not working. The Internet has changed the face of media without a doubt. If GeoDomains get their act together, they can continue to gain significant market share of local Minneapolis advertising spending.

AG: What type of services do you think a GeoDomain can offer to increase ad revenue and traffic (both of which were once the exclusive territory of other traditional media)?
BH: What springs to mind instantly is e-marketing and video and taking over the functional elements of direct marketing tools like still-picture printed pieces. In terms of classified ads, they are already dead in traditional media and video is going to affect direct marketing in the same way.

A reminder from Police Chief Risvold

The Wayzata Police Department has taken complaints over the course of the spring/summer of dogs wandering at large through neighborhoods. Wayzata city code states that it is a violation to allow a dog to be “At Large.” It further defines at large as “Off of the property of the owner and not under the restraint of the owner or a member of the owner's immediate family.”

Please be respectful of your neighbors and follow city code relative to this ordinance. Animals found to be at large are subject to being impounded with a minimum fee of $60 for release. It’s also not a fun experience for the dog!

As you may know, the City of Wayzata has had to make some very difficult budgeting decisions during the past several weeks. In that process, cuts have been made in the arena of communications. In addition to suspending the printed version of the Bay Window newsletter, we are limiting cable TV programming for the remainder of the year. It is our plan to air all City Council and Planning Commission meetings live and rebroadcast them several times weekly. Also, we will do our best to offer community news through our bulletin board announcements on cable TV, in our monthly Portal newsletter included in your utility bill and on our Web site, www.wayzata.org. We will do our best to offer the best quality and service during these trying financial times. Thanks for your understanding and patience.

Tim Mahoney to perform Summer Benefit Concert on Lake Minnetonka

Tim Mahoney, popular local singer/songwriter, will perform at a summer evening concert 5 to 9 p.m. July 19, to benefit the Pay It Forward Fund. The concert will be held at the Lake Minnetonka home of Michelle Morey and Scott Bissen, founders of the Pay It Forward Fund.

The 2009 event will have limited seating, with only 300 tickets available for purchase on the Pay It Forward Fund Web site www.payitforwardfund.net. Concert tickets cost $50 and include beer, brats and burgers. There will be a shuttle service to the event from the Minnesota Center for the Arts. Ticket information and directions are available on the Pay It Forward Web site.

About the Pay It Forward Fund

The Pay It Forward Fund is a fund within the North Memorial Foundation. It assists women's cancer patients (breast, ovarian,\ and uterine) undergoing treatment at North Memorial's Hubert Humphrey Cancer Center, Unity, Mercy and Monticello-Big Lake Hospitals with the payment of basic living expenses. The program allows people to donate money to a fund that makes an immediate impact on the lives of women cancer patients in need. One hundred percent of all donations will be used to help women in need. There are no administrative fees taken out of the fund. Pay It Forward Fund is a non-profit 501(c) (3) organization. 2009 Minnetonka Challenge to be held July 18, 2009

The 2009 Minnetonka Challenge will be held Saturday, July 18, and challenge swimmers to swim five miles from Excelsior Beach to Wayzata Bay.

Mandatory check-in is from 5:30 to 6:20 a.m. at Excelsior Beach and is followed by a mandatory pre-race meeting at 6:30 a.m.

Fruit, muffins and drinks will be served at the finish line at Wayzata Beach and the award ceremony will wrap things up from 10:30 to 11 a.m.

Participants must register for the swim and pay an entry fee of $25. Register for the Minnetonka Challenge online by July 14 to participate.

Defensive driving course to be held at Wayzata City Hall

The AARP defensive driving refresher course will be held 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. July 15, at Wayzata City Hall. The four-hour course is $20 and may be registered for by calling 952-249-6003.

Bend in the River Big Band brings residents together at the Summer Concert Series

Community residents gathered at the Depot on Wednesday evening for the Summer Concert Series and enjoyed music from the Bend in the River Big Band.

The Wednesday night concerts are free to the public and start every Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. For a schedule of the upcoming concerts, visit the Chamber of Commerce's Web site.

Crime alert from Police Chief Mike Risvold

The Wayzata Police Department took multiple theft from vehicle reports overnight. The victims in these cases had their vehicles parked in an underground garage at an apartment building. Access to many of the vehicles was gained by breaking windows.

We can protect ourselves by not leaving anything of value in plain view inside our vehicles. Please report any suspicious activity to the Wayzata Police Department immediately by dialing 911. Wayzata businesswoman honored with National Association of Women Business Owners Award

Barbara Hensley, owner of Wayzata's Hope Chest for Breast Cancer, was honored with the eighth annual National Association of Women Business Owners/Wells Fargo Trailblazer Award. She was awarded at NAWBO’s 2009 Women’s Business Conference June 25 in Chicago.

The winners were chosen from a pool of applicants from around the nation based on their company’s business performance, innovation, growth and service to the community, according to the NAWBO Web site.

The Wayzata-based company sells upscale furniture, clothing and accessories and a portion of the store's earnings funds breast cancer programs. Hensley started the company after losing her sisters to the disease.

Wayzata offensive linebacker to play in Minnesota High School All Star Game

Rob Bathe, a recently graduated Wayzata offensive linebacker, will be playing in the Minnesota High School All Star Game June 27. Bathe will play for the Metro All Stars, which will be playing the Outstate All Stars. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. and the game will be played at Husky Stadium in St. Cloud.

Wayzata High School grad headlines top-ranked U of M wrestling recruits

Former Wayzata High School wrestler and national champion Danny Zilverberg is part of the most recent class of recruits at the University of Minnesota that is top ranked in the nation, according to a report on GopherSports.com. Zilverberg committed to the U of M back in November 2008. Big 10 rival Iowa is the only other school in the conference to make the top five in the ranking.
